About Nurse Amanda
SPENT SOME TIME BEHIND BARS....
Spent 3 years as Correctional Nurse
I graduated from the University of Maine at Augusta in 2015 with my Associate Degree in Nursing. I knew my goal was always the Emergency Department, but where I’m located in Maine most hospitals have “Magnet Status” which makes it hard for associate degree nurses to get into. During my last semester of nursing school we toured the Maine State Prison, and I knew right away that this was my kinda crazy! Fast forward to the summer and I landed a job as a new grad behind bars.
The Prison I worked in had different areas for nurses to work at. The 4 main areas the Registered Nurses work in are; the Infirmary, the Clinic, the Intensive Mental Health Unit and the Segregation Unit (aka SMU “special management unit”). I spent my first two years in the clinic, SMU and Infirmary. My last year I was the primary nurse for the SMU and IMHU.
Emergency Department
Just started my new career as an Emergency RN May 2019! Check out the Blog section to catch up on some ED stories!
This is a documentary of the Prison and unit I worked on. DO NOT WATCH IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE. There is blood and explicit content. You can see the challenges the inmates face day to day in solitary confinements. The role of the nurse can be very important to the health of these men.
I’m a convict. I have AIDS. I’m a prostitute. I’m poor. I’m old. I’m gay. I aborted my baby. I’m a teen mom. I’m an alcoholic. I’m a beggar. I’m a drug dealer. I have cancer. I have a contagious disease.
But the Nurse said… “I’ll take care of you”
